Governance Of The Trust
In 1951 The Cutty Sark Preservation Society, was formed by Frank Carr, Director of the National Maritime Museum and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh to ensure the preservation of Cutty Sark, the world’s sole surviving tea clipper. The Cutty Sark Trust, a charity registered in 2000, is the successor of The Cutty Sark Preservation Society.
The Trust’s objectives are to conserve, maintain, interpret and display Cutty Sark, promoting access to formal and informal learning opportunities. Our aim is to ensure that the ship, its collection and services, and their historical and cultural relevance are accessible to people regardless of ability, gender, age and social ethnic or religious background. Clipper Ship Cutty Sark gained full Museum Registration in 2005, and is currently working towards Museum Accreditation.
In 2005 the Trust set up the trading subsidiary Cutty Sark Enterprises Limited. Thereafter the Trust became primarily responsible for fundraising and handling the principal charitable objectives, namely the preservation and interpretation of the ship. Cutty Sark Enterprises manages the operational activity, primarily the conservation and maintenance of Cutty Sark, and specifically the Cutty Sark Conservation Project at present.
